Press Release from the Office of the Mayor of Maui County
On a road sign outside Embo, Scotland is an announcement to the world that Embo is a Sister City of Kaunakakai, Molokai, Hawaii. This connection to Maui County was formalized in a Maui County Council Resolution in April 1990.
Recently Annie and Bo Ellison visited Embo as an emissary of the newly formed Sister Cities Foundation. They took with them the warm aloha of Maui and its Mayor. Upon returning to Maui, the Ellison’s arrived with a gift for Mayor Tavares. This plaque with Embo’s Coat of Arms will be displayed in the Mayor’s office for all to see. While in Embo, the Elisions were treated with warm hospitality, Scottish style.
Maui has 22 sister cities dating as far back as 42 years. In October 2006, the Maui County Sister Cities Foundation was formed to help connect visitors and delegations between Maui and her Sister Cities. Foundation President Edward F. Zwick invites individuals, organizations and businesses to support the Foundation by becoming members. Mayor Tavares said, “Our Sister Cities are important to the people of Maui County as they help keep us connected to the places and cultures that are a part of us.”
Art from Maui and some of its Sister Cities was displayed on March 31, 2006 at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center as part of the annual Cultural and Arts Day. In 2007, one of the youths picture was chosen for the International Art Show as a finalist.
